Addressing the Leaks Part 1

As mentioned before, our camper came with a few leaks, as many older campers do. I was able to trace our leaks to both the ventilation fan in the roof and skylights - the usual suspects. This post is about the fan…

In the case of the fan, the leak became a falling drip a the bottom of the skylight, making it appear as though it was coming from the corner of the skylight. However, close in inspection revealed a water trail from the corner of the vent fan, down the wall, along the skylight frame to the bottom corner, where it fell directly onto the dinette bench.

Removing the frame of the fan didn’t tell me much, until I flipped the frame itself over to find the water lines neatly flowing from the top middle of the fan piece down to the culprit bottom left corner. Time to test with a water hose!

After spraying water above the closed fan cover from the outside, a drip became evident a the top of the fan inside the camper, which dripped directly down onto gas range now that the frame was removed. Looking on top, I noticed a crack in the same spot on the outside. A new complete fan would have to be ordered ($150), but the quick fix was to spread a bit of Through the Roof! on the crack while we waited for the new one. After drying a few hours, a second water test proved that the leak was remedied. For now, anyway…
